The quick methods to distinguish cast iron and cast steel mainly include observing brightness, particle visibility, sound identification, gas cutting test and toughness test.
1. Brightness: Cast steel is usually shiny, while cast iron is dark and gray. Gray iron and ductile iron in cast iron also differ in brightness, and ductile iron is brighter than gray cast iron.
2. Particle visibility: The particles of cast steel are relatively compact and generally invisible to the naked eye. The particles of gray iron and ductile iron are visible, and the particles of gray iron are larger.
3. Sound identification: The sound produced by the collision of cast steel and cast iron is different, and the sound of cast steel is clearly different from the sound of cast iron.
4. Gas cutting test: The surface of steel castings is relatively rough, and the riser and gate area are large, so gas cutting is usually required to remove them. Gas cutting of ductile iron is not easy to cut.
5. Toughness test: The toughness of cast steel is close to that of steel plate, while the toughness of ductile iron is slightly inferior to that of cast steel. Gray cast iron has no toughness.
