ASTM A48 covers gray iron castings intended for general use. A48 is a high material grade in this standard.
ASTM A48 castings are supplied based solely on tensile strength where no chemical requirements or ductility is specified. The tensile strength requirements are specified by class number and class type.
Mechanical & Chemical Composition of ASTM A48 CLASS 45 Gray Cast Iron
Carbon 3.1%
Silicon 1.45%
Mangenese 0.9%
Phosphorous Max 0.08%
Sulphur 0.12%
BHN 196 - 255
Tensile Strength (PSI) 45,000
Minimum Wall Thickness 5/8"
* On a 1.2" ASTM A-48B Test Bar
As for normal grey iron, the chemical composition is not important comparatively. The iron foundries could adjust the compositions according to their experience as long as they could meet the physical and mechanical requirements.
