The large cast iron machine tool castings need to be made by sand casting process. The common material grades are gray cast iron EN-GJL-250 and EN-GJL-300 in Europan standard EN 1561.
Advantages of gray cast iron for large machine tool castings:
            1. Good Shock Absorption
Gray cast iron has good shock absorption performance, which is good to avoiding vibration and reducing noise when the machine is running.
            2. Good Lubricity
The microholes in the gray iron atomic structure can accommodate more lubricating oil, and the carbon element contained in it has self-lubricating effect, so the machine tool bed castings produced by gray iron material have good lubrication performance.
            3. Good Corrosion Resistance
Cast iron has better corrosion resistance than steel, which is easy to maintain the accuracy of the machine tool for a long time.
            4. Compressive Strength
The compressive strength of gray cast iron is close to that of steel, which can meet the requirements of physical properties.
            5. Good Casting Properties
Gray cast iron has good casting properties and is easy to cast a variety of complex structures.
            6. Low Cost
Compared with other metal materials, the cost of gray iron machine tool castings is relatively low. |
