Nodular Iron
Nodular iron is also called nodular cast
iron,
ductile iron and spheroidal
graphite cast iron.
Nodular iron is handled through the
graphite ball and inoculated by
spherical graphite. Nodular iron has
effectively improved the mechanical
properties, in particular, improve the
ductility and toughness, which is higher
than is the strength of forged steel.
The fifties of the 20th century, nodular
iron has been effectively developed as a
high-strength cast iron material, the
overall performance close to forged
steel. Based on its excellent
performance, nodular iron has been
successfully used to cast a number of
complex stress, strength, toughness,
wear requirement of higher parts. Rapid
development of nodular iron has made
nodular iron widely used in many civil
and industrial areas. Forged steel is
gradually replaced by nodular iron.
Nodular iron castings almost cover all
major industrial sectors. They have been
applied in these sectors that require
high strength, ductility, toughness,
wear resistance, resistance to severe
thermal and mechanical shock, high
temperature or low temperature,
corrosion resistance and dimensional
stability. To meet the conditions of use
of these changes, many of the existing
grade nodular iron, mechanical

Compared with grey cast iron, ductile
cast iron in strength has an absolute
advantage. The tensile strength of
nodular iron is 60k, while the tensile
strength of grey cast iron is only 31k.
The yield strength of nodular iron is
40k, but grey cast iron does not show
the yield strength, and eventually be
broken. Strength nodular iron - cost
ratio far superior to grey cast iron.
The strength of nodular iron and steel
strength is comparable. Nodular iron has
higher yield strength, yield strength
minimum of 40k, while the yield strength
of steel is only 36k. In most municipal
applications, such as: water, salt
water, steam, cast iron corrosion
resistance and oxidation resistance of
more than steel.
Because of the spherical graphite cast
iron microstructure, the decrease
vibration capability, nodular iron is
better than cast steel and forged steel,
therefore more conducive to reducing
stress. Low cost and better performance
are the main reason to choose nodular
iron than steel. Low-cost iron makes the
material more popular, casting more
efficient, less the cost of nodular iron
machining.
